A place to find short stories, novelettes to collaborate on.

Home page lists projects actively seeking co-authors.

It has a blank document at the top to start your own piece. And a tab for reading published works.

The Basis: Turns

A story is written in Turns, ordered segments that can hold up to 2200 words each. Turns are stitched together when you Publish.

Both in solo and collaboratives, use Turns however you wish. Cause Turns are just separate numerically ordered documents that any co-author can Claim temporary ownership of and edit. Learn more.

The Workflow

A solo workflow can be simplified as you just writing in Turns and publishing the Post when it's ready. Collaboratives begin with you publishing Turn 1 right away and prospective co-authors auditioning their versions of Turn 2 as continuations to your story. Choose one of these Turn 2 submitters as your co-author (making the Post private again) and from there the two of you write until it's ready to be published proper. You can also directly invite a specific user as your co-author which skips the audition phase entirely.

Step 1.1: Write the opening

A new work starts with you pouring the first few words of it into a fresh Turn 1 sheet. You can save it as either a solo or a collaborative Post. For collaboratives, save as a draft if it's not ready to receive auditions yet.

Step 1.2: Invite
(for Collaboratives only)

From the Turn 1 sheet, click Invite Authors, fill out some details for prospective co-authors, and choose whether to directly invite someone you know or to open up invitation for anyone willing to collaborate.

Step 2: Find a co-author

(for Open-Invitation path only)

Direct Invitees directly become your co-author. Open-Invitation Posts appear under the Collaborate tab of every user's Home feed, where anyone can improvise their own versions of Turn 2 to your story.

Your Post Dashboard will list auditions (Collab-submissions) from prospective co-authors. Choose one of them as your co-author to share equal rights with them for the rest of this work.

Step 3: Cook and publish

Use Turns however you wish in solo Posts. In collaboratives, choosing a co-author unlocks Turn 2 and the rest. Communicate through Discussions to establish how you wish to navigate Turns and responsibilities. Use Suggestions to suggest edits for or share your ideas on a particular Turn. Exchange Turns using the Claim/Unclaim feature. Hit Publish when you are ready to share your result with the world.

Real-time Notes

Store lore, character backstories, outlines, or anything. Unlike Turns, Notes are always owned by anyone with access to the Dashboard and can be edited collaboratively in real-time.

Companions

Invite users as Companions to help you out in various roles (e.g. proofreader, critique partner). They cannot participate in Turns but can leave Suggestions, edit Notes and Discuss.

Forums

Hang out in the Write With Me community space to find Co-authors and Companions. Help yourself and others improve. Talk literature and unwind. Discuss the future of the platform.
